The Black Employment Resource
Centre
The
Black Employment Resource Centre (BERC) opened in the
fall of 1997. The mandate of the BERC is to work with
other community partners to address barriers to
employment faced by members of the Black communities of
Yarmouth & Shelburne Counties and the District of
Clare. The goal of the BERC is to enhance the
employability of the community members and to facilitate
long-term employment.
Services
The
BERC can provide employment assistance to members of the
Black Community through Wage Subsidy Programs. With
these subsidies, the BERC can offer a percentage of the
employee’s wage for a period of up to one year.
Also,
we contact financial institutions for loans towards
starting and establishing a new business. The BERC does
provide casual labour by the hour as well as by the day
for various activities, such as raking leaves,
shovelling snow, yard work, moving homes, and light
housework.
